Being heard is not the same as being fixed

When you tell a friend about something that is weighing on you, there is often a moment where they start solving it. Have you tried this? Why don't you just do that? They mean well. They want the hard thing to go away.

And sometimes that is exactly what you wanted. Other times you notice yourself going quiet, because what you needed was not a plan. You needed someone to follow along.

Two different kinds of help

Advice looks forward: here is what to do next. Listening stays with you where you are: here is what is happening, and I am paying attention. Both are kind. They are just not the same thing, and getting one when you hoped for the other can leave you feeling more alone than before.

Being listened to well can also help you hear yourself. Saying something out loud, at your own speed, to someone who is not rushing to respond, sometimes shows you what you think about it.

Why we ask first

This is why every Hear2Heart session starts with a choice. Would you like your listener to simply listen, or would you prefer a few gentle questions? Questions can help you think something through. Silence and attention can give you room. You decide which one fits today.

Our listeners do not give clinical advice, and they will not tell you how to run your life. That is not a limitation we apologize for. It is the point of the service: one hour where nobody is trying to fix you.

When you do need more than listening

Some things call for a professional. If you are looking for therapy, diagnosis, or treatment, a qualified mental health professional is the right person to talk to. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, please contact your local emergency number right away. Hear2Heart is not an emergency service.

If what you want is an hour of being heard, without anyone steering, we are here for that.
